Crypto Spot vs Perpetual Screening
Separate crypto spot and perpetual screening with consistent feeds, quality checks and an independent review of contract and execution costs.
Crypto spot and perpetual screening can produce different rankings for the same underlying assets. Treat that difference as a reason to inspect the source context. Do not assume one reading is wrong simply because another venue or contract shows a different score.
Start by defining whether your research basket contains spot pairs, perpetual contracts or both. A deliberate separation makes the results easier to explain and avoids mixing contract-specific risks into a spot workflow.
Match the feed to the research purpose
Use full exchange-prefixed symbols. Record the market type, quote currency and source timeframe. The Planner’s supplied crypto baskets use spot symbols; editable symbols allow other compatible feeds, subject to their data quality and units.
If your intended execution instrument is a perpetual contract, do not assume a spot chart contains every relevant execution detail. Verify the contract with the venue’s current documentation. Conversely, a derivative’s chart should not silently stand in for a spot exposure review.
Keep participation comparisons consistent
Volume can differ between exchanges and between spot and derivatives markets. An elevated relative-volume reading describes activity against that feed’s baseline. It does not establish order-book depth or the costs of filling your order.
The turnover interpretation must also match the feed. Unknown units, contract quantities and quote amounts should not be treated as interchangeable. The Planner does not calculate every derivatives contract’s notional amount automatically.
On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.
| Review question | Spot basket | Perpetual basket |
|---|---|---|
| Source identity | Exact spot pair and exchange | Exact contract and exchange |
| Participation | Verify spot volume semantics | Verify contract volume semantics |
| Execution review | Spread, fees and available quantity | Spread, fees and contract-specific costs |
| Exposure review | Asset holdings and currency | Margin, liquidation and contract terms externally |
| Comparison record | Basket and timestamp | Basket and timestamp |
Work through a disagreement
Imagine the spot feed for Asset A is qualified while the perpetual feed is blocked for low relative participation. Both outputs can be internally consistent because they use different source histories.
Check that the two observations use equivalent timing and settings. Then compare the underlying bars rather than the colors alone. Preserve the disagreement in the journal instead of selecting whichever panel supports the desired trade direction.
Preserve the boundary between analysis and leverage
The Planner produces candidate discovery states. It does not read your derivatives account, select leverage or calculate your liquidation price. A high score is not a reason to increase leverage.
Before any derivatives decision, review the venue’s current funding, margin and liquidation rules independently. These are execution and account mechanics, not hidden features of a technical screener. Costs can change the suitability of a candidate without changing its chart score.
Create separate review queues
Use one queue for spot chart candidates and another for derivative-specific investigations. Keep group identifiers so a later review can reconstruct which market produced each observation.
A consistent workflow can still compare the two markets, but it should label that comparison explicitly. The purpose is to learn whether the context agrees across sources, not to pretend that agreement removes uncertainty.
Frequently asked questions
Does a spot LONG state mean a perpetual long is suitable?
No. It describes directional context in the selected spot feed. Contract, execution and account checks remain separate.
Can different exchanges legitimately show different scores?
Yes. Different source bars, participation histories and timing can produce different analytical states. Inspect those inputs before judging the difference.
