Pre-Market Stock Screening Checklist
Build a pre-market stock screening routine that separates the previous close, extended-session data and the checks required after the market opens.
Pre-market stock screening is most useful when it prepares questions for the coming session. It becomes misleading when yesterday’s confirmed state, extended-session activity and today’s opening behavior are treated as one observation.
Before looking for leaders, define the data you are reviewing. Is the panel based on the previous regular-session close, an extended-session feed or an actively forming source bar? The answer determines what the shortlist can tell you.
Fix the session and timing convention
Record the full stock symbol, exchange, source timeframe and session setting. Verify the feed’s availability and any delay. Do not assume all international markets are in the same stage of their trading day.
The Planner uses confirmed source observations for its discovery workflow. A confirmed observation can remain useful for preparation while still being older than the current session. Keep its timestamp visible in your notes.
Add information outside the screener
Check current company-event information independently. Earnings, known corporate actions and instrument-specific news are not automatically resolved by a technical rank. Use authoritative company or exchange information for those checks.
The purpose is not to overwhelm the review with every headline. It is to avoid treating a chart-only observation as a complete account of the stock’s near-term context.
On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.
| Preparation step | Record | Question for the opening session |
|---|---|---|
| Source observation | Session and confirmation time | Is this still the relevant context? |
| Candidate quality | Base Action and first quality reason | Did the limitation change? |
| Structural location | Nearby opposing chart level | Is there room for the proposed scenario? |
| Company events | Verified scheduled event | Does the event alter the review plan? |
| Execution conditions | Independent spread and liquidity check | Are conditions suitable for the intended order? |
Use the shortlist as a question list
Imagine a stock ranks highly at the previous close but is close to resistance. The pre-market note should not say “buy at open.” It can say “review whether the opening session confirms continuation and whether the nearby level remains an obstacle.”
Another stock may be blocked for low participation on the selected feed. Keep that reason in the queue. A large pre-market price change does not by itself prove that the quality condition has been resolved.
Avoid mixing baskets and currencies casually
For a first pass, prefer a defined regional or sector basket. If you use international symbols, record currencies and session differences. Raw turnover values are not automatically currency-normalized by the Planner.
Keep the universe stable through the review. Adding a stock only after a large opening move can be a legitimate new investigation, but it should not be retrospectively counted as a pre-market selection.
Recheck after new source information arrives
Set a review point tied to your actual source interval. Revisit the shortlist when a relevant observation confirms, rather than treating every intrabar movement as a new settled state.
Record which preparation questions were answered and which remain open. This creates a clean distinction between selection, confirmation and execution review. It also provides a more honest journal than a collection of successful opening charts chosen afterward.
Frequently asked questions
Is pre-market ranking enough to choose a trade?
No. It organizes attention. Current chart location, event context, execution conditions and risk still require review.
Can the same routine work for different exchanges?
Yes, if the session and data conventions are adapted explicitly. Do not assume one market’s opening schedule describes every other market.
