Breakout vs Continuation vs Recovery Setups
Distinguish breakout, continuation and recovery setup labels, then review timing, participation and nearby structure before prioritizing a chart.
Breakout, continuation and recovery setups describe different analytical contexts. Reading them as interchangeable green signals removes useful information. A breakout asks about movement beyond a reference; continuation asks about persistence within a directional context; recovery asks about improvement from a weaker prior condition.
In Crypto Setup Planner, the Setup column is one layer of the discovery process. It does not replace score, quality state, source timing or a full chart review.
Start with the pattern’s question
For a breakout, ask what reference is being crossed and whether the relevant observation has confirmed. For continuation, ask whether the directional context remains intact without becoming excessively extended. For recovery, ask what has improved and what opposing structure remains.
These are interpretation questions, not a claim about the script’s exact thresholds. Use the current product methodology and input tooltips for the implemented requirements.

| Setup category | First chart question | Frequent review concern |
|---|---|---|
| BREAKOUT | Which reference has changed its role? | False acceptance or nearby opposing structure |
| CONTINUATION | What supports persistence? | Extension and late arrival |
| RECOVERY | What has improved from the prior state? | Unresolved opposing trend or level |
| UNCLASSIFIED | Which required pattern features are absent? | Forcing a story onto an incomplete observation |
Keep classification separate from action
A classified setup can still be blocked. Participation may be inadequate, history may be insufficient, or the setup may be stale. The label tells you what pattern was detected; it does not state that all discovery requirements are satisfied.
Similarly, UNCLASSIFIED is information rather than a defect. The current observation may not fit the script’s supported pattern categories. Do not invent a missing setup solely because the asset’s score is attractive.
Compare three hypothetical candidates
Imagine a breakout candidate with strong participation but an opposing level nearby, a continuation candidate with a stale setup, and a recovery candidate with acceptable quality. Each deserves a different question.
The breakout needs a location review. The continuation needs a timing review. The recovery needs a check of what structure still opposes the improving direction. None should receive an automatic trade simply because its label sounds appealing.
Use source timing consistently
Save the source timeframe and confirmation time with the classification. A five-minute recovery and a daily recovery describe different observation scales. Comparing the labels without their intervals can create an illusion of agreement.
If you adjust sensitivity or other requirements, version the settings. A historical comparison is meaningful only if the classification rules used at each observation are known.
Build a pattern-specific journal
Keep separate review results for breakout, continuation and recovery candidates. Record rejection reasons and unresolved limitations. Over time, this helps identify which category fits your research routine without assuming that one pattern is universally superior.
Evaluate the categories prospectively. Selecting only attractive historical examples can make any label appear useful while hiding the candidates that failed review.
Frequently asked questions
Is a recovery setup always earlier than a continuation setup?
No. The terms describe context under the implemented rules. Their timing and usefulness depend on the data and settings.
Should a breakout label override BLOCKED?
No. Classification does not cancel independent quality requirements. Investigate the block before advancing the candidate.
