Commodity screening

How to Screen Commodities in TradingView

Build a verified commodity shortlist with editable symbols. Separate spot, CFD, fund and futures data before interpreting volume, timing and qualification.

Screening gold, energy or agricultural markets in TradingView starts with choosing the right data series. A name such as “gold” can refer to a spot quotation, a broker CFD, a dated futures contract, a continuous futures series or an exchange-traded fund. These instruments can describe related markets while reporting different prices, sessions and volume units.

Crypto Setup Planner can review selected global stock, ETF and commodity-related TradingView feeds through its editable symbol inputs. Its name does not restrict the workflow to cryptocurrencies. However, adding a symbol does not establish that its data supports every quality check. This guide explains how to build and validate a commodity shortlist without treating incompatible feeds as interchangeable.

1. Choose the instrument before choosing the ticker

Define the analytical question first. Are you reviewing spot-price context, a particular futures contract, a continuous historical series or a listed fund? Open TradingView symbol search, inspect the provider or exchange, and copy the full identifier. Retain the prefix; two similarly named symbols can use different providers.

TradingView’s chart-information documentation distinguishes instrument types, quote currency, volume type and contract point value. Those fields explain why a price series and its reported volume need separate checks. Access to the indicator does not include an exchange-data subscription or change your data entitlements.

  • Spot or CFD feed: verify whether volume represents traded units, quote turnover, ticks or unavailable data.
  • Dated futures: record the exact contract and expiry, and review its own trading activity.
  • Continuous futures: record the rollover and adjustment convention used for the chart.
  • Commodity-related ETF: treat it as a listed fund with its own session, currency and share volume. It is a separate instrument from the underlying commodity.

2. Create a deliberate editable group

Save a copy of your existing indicator configuration. Choose an editable group, replace its symbol inputs with the exchange-qualified identifiers you have checked, and select that group as the active universe. Group 1 exposes individual symbol fields. Review every remaining slot so an old crypto symbol does not become an unintended member of the comparison.

The Planner scans one selected group, with up to 39 active symbol slots. It does not search every commodity contract or every global exchange automatically. The market presets and editable inputs give you control over the comparison; the group membership still needs your attention. A dedicated commodity preset is not required to enter supported custom feeds.

Begin with a small, coherent comparison. Keep feed types, quote units and source intervals understandable. A mixed list of spot gold, a leveraged fund and an expiring futures contract may produce rows, but a single numerical rank will not explain their economic differences. Write the purpose of the basket beside its saved configuration.

3. Validate volume before interpreting liquidity

The Planner’s volume controls distinguish Auto, Base, Quote and Unknown. Auto uses source metadata. Base computes the feed’s reported volume multiplied by price; Quote uses the reported quote-volume value directly. Unknown or tick volume cannot establish quote turnover for an enabled turnover check. Do not select an override simply to make a blocked row qualify.

The screening turnover calculation does not apply a futures contract point-value multiplier. A futures feed reporting contract count therefore needs special care. “Base” is not a universal conversion from contracts to quote-currency notional. Inspect the provider’s unit definition before treating the resulting number as traded monetary value.

For an illustrative calculation, suppose a feed reports 100 contracts, a price of 2,500 and a contract multiplier of 100. Volume × price gives 250,000, while volume × price × multiplier gives 25,000,000. These are different measures. The Planner’s simple Base calculation follows the first expression; this arithmetic example is not a measured market observation or an execution estimate.

Turnover thresholds are in the source quote currency, with no automatic USD conversion. A USD threshold, a TRY threshold and a quote in minor currency units require separate calibration. Relative volume is a ratio against that feed’s own volume average; it does not establish cash liquidity, spread or available order-book depth.

4. Check continuous history and rollover effects

A continuous futures series joins successive contracts for historical analysis. It is useful for context, but you should identify the actual contract used for an execution review. TradingView explains that back-adjustment changes earlier contract data to remove rollover gaps. Record whether that option is enabled where available.

Changing a historical series can change calculations that depend on its prices. When a score, ATR reading or structural reference differs between two views, compare the contract, adjustment convention and source timestamp before concluding that the indicator is inconsistent. Do not assume a chart-display option has automatically changed every requested source series in the same way.

Inspect enough completed candles for the chosen profile. A newly active or thinly traded contract may have different history and participation from a continuous series. Warmup or missing-data states deserve investigation. Increasing chart history cannot manufacture missing source observations.

5. Use a feed-validation worksheet

Complete this record for each feed before comparing qualified rows. On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally; the table can also receive keyboard focus.

Commodity feed and screening checks
Field Record Reason to pause
Instrument Full ticker, provider, spot/CFD/fund/contract type The intended instrument differs from the selected series
History Contract, expiry or continuous-series convention Rollover, adjustment or insufficient history is unresolved
Units Quote currency, price scale, volume definition, multiplier Turnover cannot be interpreted in a verified unit
Timing Session, source interval and completed source timestamp The row is stale or compared with an unfinished candle
Qualification Score, Side, Quality, Setup and Flags A blocked row is being treated as an eligible candidate

6. Preserve qualification and source timing

Use the same source interval throughout the comparison. Position uses daily source candles; Swing uses four-hour source candles. Adaptive profiles follow the chart, while Custom / Manual exposes the editable parameters. Keep the chart interval at or below the scan interval, and check the installed profile’s tooltip before creating alerts.

The Planner reviews completed source candles. A market between sessions may legitimately retain its last completed observation, but that observation is not a fresh executable quotation. Compare the source timestamp with the expected session, then examine the selected instrument’s chart. Our confirmed-candle guide explains the difference between source and chart clocks.

Read Quality before emphasizing the highest score. Low participation, insufficient history, stale structure or inadequate room can prevent qualification. A directional Side describes analytical bias; it does not establish the availability or suitability of a short position. Removing a quality gate to obtain more rows changes the question you are asking.

7. Move from the shortlist to the actual chart

Open the exact shortlisted feed and review price location, nearby structure and the current session. For futures, separately check the relevant tradable contract and its specifications. For a fund, review that fund rather than substituting a spot chart. Spread, costs, margin and order execution require information outside this discovery panel.

Save the reviewed group and follow the indicator-alert checklist when creating or replacing notifications. Existing alerts retain their saved configuration; a changed group or source interval must not silently coexist with an old alert describing a different basket.

Explore Crypto Setup Planner’s multi-market discovery workflow, then use the real-dashboard reading guide to interpret its rows. For stock and fund presets, continue with the stocks and ETFs setup guide. The Planner prioritizes chart review; it does not calculate futures notional, place orders or promise profitable commodity signals.
