A Trading Journal Template for Screened Setups

Use a trading journal template that preserves screener observations, rejected candidates, chart review and net outcomes without hindsight edits.

A trading journal for screened setups should begin before an order exists. It needs to preserve why a symbol entered the shortlist, what the chart review found and why the candidate advanced, waited or was rejected.

Recording only trades hides the discovery process. It also makes it difficult to assess whether Crypto Setup Planner or a chart workflow saved attention while maintaining consistent quality.

Create one record per observation

Give each observation an identifier. Save symbol, group, feed, source interval, confirmation time and settings version. Keep the original state rather than replacing it with a later panel reading.

If the candidate changes later, append a new observation linked to the earlier one. This retains the sequence without rewriting history.

Use a compact journal template

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.

Use a compact journal template: practical comparison
Journal field Example content Purpose
Observation ID Basket-version and timestamp Connects later reviews
Discovery state Score, action, setup, quality and flags Preserves selection evidence
Chart location Relevant opposing structure Explains the review constraint
Research outcome Advance, wait, reject or data investigation Includes non-trades
Scenario rule Explicit condition being studied Prevents improvised hindsight
Execution record Actual fills and costs, if a trade occurs Separates analysis from execution
Review result Net outcome and process notes Supports later assessment

Use this table in a spreadsheet or your existing journal. A new subscription is not required to build the record.

Record rejected candidates

Suppose a hypothetical basket produces five chart reviews. Three are rejected for location, one waits for a quality condition and one advances. The journal should contain all five observations, not just the final candidate.

Later, price may rise on a rejected symbol. That does not automatically prove the rejection was wrong. Review whether the process followed its defined constraints with the information available at the time.

Separate planned and realized outcomes

If a trade occurs, keep intended entry, failure condition and target separate from actual fills and exits. Record costs consistently. A planned 2R target is not the same as a realized 2R winner.

For candidates that never became trades, use an explicitly defined observation outcome if you study one. Do not call a later favorable price move a personal trading profit.

Preserve tool roles

Record which tool answered which question. The Planner narrows attention; Trading Suite can organize broader chart context; Channels can clarify rail structure. An outcome should not be attributed to a tool that did not produce the relevant decision.

When a configuration changes, start a new journal version. Mixing results across silently changed settings makes the aggregate statistics difficult to interpret.

Review process metrics first

Count charts opened, rejected candidates, unresolved data issues and observation-to-review delay. Then examine recorded net outcomes if actual trades occurred. This keeps workflow improvement separate from unproven profitability claims.

Frequently asked questions

Should I delete a journal entry after deciding not to trade?

No. Non-trades help explain selection discipline and reveal whether the shortlist was useful.

Can I fill the journal retrospectively from attractive charts?

You can conduct a labeled historical exercise, but it is not equivalent to a prospective record. Preserve that distinction.

Apply the framework

Use Trading Suite to organize configured chart context and analytical scenarios. Inspect its real interface and the distinct jobs of the enabled modules. Keep the observed state separate from broker execution, personal position size and any claim about future returns.
