Turnover Thresholds and TradingView Volume Units

Set turnover thresholds only after checking TradingView volume units, currency and instrument type, including Base, Quote and unknown feeds.

Turnover thresholds can improve screening discipline by excluding observations with inadequate participation. They can also create false confidence if the volume field has been interpreted incorrectly. Before tuning a threshold, verify what the selected TradingView feed reports.

Crypto Setup Planner provides volume-interpretation choices because one universal assumption cannot describe every crypto, stock and commodity feed.

Identify the reported unit

Ask whether volume represents base units, quote value, contracts, ticks or an unknown quantity. Then identify the price’s currency. The symbol label alone may not settle either question.

For the Planner’s Base interpretation, the estimate uses reported volume multiplied by price. For Quote interpretation, it uses the reported quote amount. These are different transformations, not alternative ways to manufacture the same number.

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.

Identify the reported unit: practical comparison
Interpretation Illustrative input Resulting question
Base quantity 2,000 units at a price of 50 Is the approximate 100,000 quote-unit value meaningful?
Quote amount 100,000 reported quote units Is the field already monetary participation?
Contract quantity 2,000 contracts What contract multiplier and price convention apply?
Tick count 2,000 updates Does this measure support a turnover requirement at all?

The example numbers are arithmetic illustrations. They are not live market observations or evidence that a particular feed uses those conventions.

Avoid multiplying monetary volume twice

If a field already represents quote amount, multiplying it by price again can create a misleading magnitude. Conversely, treating a base-unit quantity as quote turnover can understate the intended estimate.

Check provider documentation or a known instrument reference before selecting a manual override. Auto interpretation can assist where feed metadata is informative, but it does not remove the need to investigate unfamiliar sources.

Keep currency and contract limits visible

The Planner does not automatically convert all turnover into USD. A threshold applied across different trading currencies therefore needs a deliberate unit policy.

It also does not automatically apply every futures contract multiplier. Commodity contracts require an instrument-specific notional review if that is part of your process. Tick or unknown volume can remain unsuitable for a required monetary participation gate.

Diagnose a blocked candidate correctly

Suppose a stock leader shows LOW TURNOVER. First inspect the feed units and threshold currency. If they are correct, the block may be a legitimate result under your configuration. If they are unsuitable, record a data interpretation issue rather than concluding that the company is illiquid.

Changing the threshold without solving the units can hide the problem. A professional review distinguishes a strict rule from an invalid input.

Maintain a feed register

For each basket, retain symbol, market type, trading currency, volume interpretation, evidence source and threshold. Recheck the register when changing providers or adding a new instrument family.

Run a small comparison after a settings change and save it as a new configuration version. This lets you evaluate the impact without rewriting the explanation for previous candidates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply one turnover threshold to all world markets?

Only after defining compatible units and a currency policy. The script does not normalize every instrument’s contract mechanics and currency automatically.

Does an unknown volume field mean zero trading activity?

No. It means the required interpretation is not established. Missing knowledge should not be converted into a confident market claim.
