Multi-market screening

Gold Screening: Spot, Futures and ETF Differences

Compare gold spot, futures and ETF charts with the right feed, volume and contract checks before building a TradingView screening basket.

Gold screening begins with a deceptively simple question: which gold instrument are you analyzing? A spot quotation, a dated futures contract, a continuous futures chart and an ETF can all describe gold-related prices while representing different data and trading mechanics.

Crypto Setup Planner can use editable commodity-related symbols available on TradingView. There is no automatic all-commodities scan. For gold, start with a deliberately selected feed and check whether its data supports the quality filters you want to use.

Distinguish the instrument before reading the score

Write down the full symbol and whether it represents a quotation, a tradeable contract or a fund. For a fund, read the issuer’s current objective. For a futures contract, consult the exchange specification and expiry information. Do not infer these details from the ticker’s short name.

A continuous futures chart is a research series assembled from contracts. It is not itself a single dated contract you can hold. Historical adjustment conventions can also affect the price path around rolls.

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.

Distinguish the instrument before reading the score: practical comparison
Gold chart type First verification Screening caution
Spot or broker quotation Provider and volume meaning Tick activity may not represent traded quantity
Dated futures Contract, expiry and exchange specification Volume units need contract-aware interpretation
Continuous futures Roll and adjustment convention History differs from one contract’s history
ETF Issuer objective and listing Fund mechanics differ from gold itself

Check volume semantics before turnover

A numerical volume field is not proof of comparable monetary turnover. Commodity feeds may report contracts, ticks or another quantity. The Planner does not automatically add a futures contract multiplier or translate every instrument into USD notional value.

Do not select a volume interpretation merely because it produces a plausible-looking number. When the feed meaning is unknown or unsuitable, keep the limitation visible and review whether a required turnover gate should block the observation. Disabling a gate changes the process; it does not repair the source data.

Separate technical context from contract risk

The screener can organize direction, setup and quality context. It does not calculate your futures margin, expiry exposure, liquidation risk or account-level position sizing. These belong to the instrument and execution review.

For a hypothetical comparison, imagine a gold ETF is QUALIFIED while a futures series has an unknown volume interpretation. That is not evidence the ETF will outperform. It means the two observations have different levels of usable screening information.

Create a defensible commodity basket

Use separate groups for instruments with different mechanics when necessary. Fix the timeframe, session convention and review time. Keep a small feed register containing the provider, market type, currency, volume interpretation and contract notes.

Open the shortlisted chart and examine nearby opposing structure. A clean screener state can still arrive close to a significant chart level. Candidate discovery should lead to a more informed review, not skip it.

Record what can and cannot be compared

Your journal should distinguish directional ranking from monetary participation. Mark any external contract checks as external checks. This avoids presenting a technical panel as a complete commodity trading system.

The benefit of a multi-market screener is a consistent way to organize research across compatible feeds. Its value is strongest when the feed limitations are explicit rather than hidden behind a universal-looking score.

Frequently asked questions

Can Crypto Setup Planner research gold?

Yes, through editable compatible TradingView symbols. You must choose the feed and verify its data semantics; there is no claim that every gold feed is equally suitable.

Does the Planner handle futures contract multipliers automatically?

No. Do not use its turnover reading as a complete contract-notional calculation without a separate instrument-specific check.
