Oil Screening and Futures Rollover Checks
Review oil screening results with contract expiry, continuous-futures rollover and volume-unit checks before treating a chart change as a setup.
Oil screening requires a clear distinction between a market move and a data-series transition. A dated futures contract, a continuous futures chart and an oil-related ETF are different instruments. A sudden change on one series can have a different explanation from a change on another.
Use a screener to organize technical attention, then verify contract context. Crypto Setup Planner’s editable symbols can support commodity research, but the script does not manage futures rolls, contract specifications or execution risk for you.
Identify what the oil symbol represents
Record the exchange, contract month if applicable, quote currency and provider. If you use a continuous chart, identify the roll method and whether backadjustment is enabled. TradingView documents that continuous futures can switch contracts and can adjust historical prices to address roll gaps.
These conventions matter for historical comparisons. A past level on an adjusted series may differ from the same period on an unadjusted or dated-contract chart. Keep the convention fixed within a review.
Build a rollover review checklist
On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to review every column.
| Check | Evidence to retain | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Series identity | Full symbol and contract type | Avoids treating different series as one instrument |
| Roll convention | Provider’s documented switching method | Explains possible discontinuities |
| Adjustment | Enabled or disabled in the research chart | Affects historical level comparisons |
| Volume meaning | Contracts, quote amount or another field | Determines whether turnover is interpretable |
| Tradeable contract | Broker and exchange specification | Research series may not be the execution instrument |
For instrument mechanics, use the exchange’s current contract documentation. Do not substitute a generic screener score for the checks required by a specific futures contract.
Investigate abrupt structural changes
Suppose a hypothetical continuous oil chart prints an apparent break while the dated contract you intend to review shows a different path. Before calling it a breakout, check whether a contract switch or adjustment explains the difference.
Compare like with like: the same timeframe, session and series convention. If the move remains after the data context is understood, proceed to normal structure and quality review. If not, log it as a series issue rather than a failed market prediction.
Avoid a universal turnover assumption
The Planner does not automatically multiply futures volume by every contract’s point value or convert all feeds to dollar notional turnover. Selecting Base or Quote interpretation without confirming the feed can therefore create an invalid comparison.
A blocked quality state may be the correct result when the required input cannot be trusted. Faster screening is useful only if it preserves the distinction between usable observations and unsuitable data.
Separate the shortlist from an oil trade plan
Candidate ranking does not resolve expiry, rollover costs, margin requirements or account exposure. It also cannot guarantee that a chart’s nearby level will hold. Use the shortlist to select a chart for deeper review, with the instrument checks documented beside it.
Maintain a rollover note in the research journal. Record changes to the underlying series or adjustment settings so later performance reviews do not compare incompatible histories.
Frequently asked questions
Is a continuous futures ticker a single contract?
No. It is a series that links contracts according to its provider’s rules. Verify which dated contract is relevant to actual execution.
Should I disable quality checks to make oil screening work?
First investigate the source and volume units. Disabling a requirement is a methodological change, not evidence that the data became reliable.
